Shetland Islands cliff walk Sept. 25, 2023
Our favorite hike of the trip was the bird cliff hike we did on the 25th in the Shetland Islands. The itinerary changed a number of times to dodge the worst of the higher wave seas and grab the best weather at the locations they were hoping to go to. So after being in Lerwick, they traveled overnight back north to the very top of the Shetland islands for this hike. The lighthouse in the photos is the northernmost light house in Britain, and a very dramatic and scenic one. The gannets are still on the cliffs along with some fulmars and it was quite the dramatic location. A beautiful landing spot that we accessed by Zodiac (the second Zodiac landing of the trip). We Hokies with the group for most of the time but lingered longer and took in one other cliff area so we were one of the last ones to get back to the boat. We both loved this spot and we had a very windy day for it…made it all the more dramatic. Luckily petite Donna was not blown off into the sea! We got rained on for a while near the end of the day, but it was so windy that after it stopped raining we both dried out very quickly. A wonderful day!
