Diamond Circle, Iceland Sept. 12, 2023
Drove the “Diamond Circle” today, taking in more coastal scenery, a volcanic formation hike in a national park, Dettifoss, the largest by volume waterfall in Europe, Selfoss, just upstream from Dettifoss and the Myvatn area. The flat topped peak in the photos is Herdubreid, a tuya volcano, voted as Iceland’s national mountain. Myvatn means “lake of midges” and they aren’t kidding. We saw people riding horses with head nets on…we wisely just drove the loop and grabbed some photos. And yes, we did see the northern lights. Two nights in a row. Donna took the photos with her old school iPhone SE and they’re not sharp but at least we got something to remember that we saw them. Pretty early for northern lights so we’re excited we got to see them!
