Portslahofn, Iceland and day at sea, Sept. 21 and 22, 2023
So as this is an expedition cruise, plans can change and sure enough they change right off the bat. The marine weather forecast is showing 7.5 meter seas (that’s around 22 foot waves!) for our day at sea crossing to the Faroe Islands, so they switch gears, and we head back to Iceland and Portslahofn for the day…a walk along another black sand beach, ageoolgy walk and talk, and knocking around town are on our agenda. We lose one of our two days in the Faroe Islands but it probably beats being sick all day and night or suffering the fate of the Titanic, so you go with the flow. Our day at sea following our stop in Portslahofn, was still fairly rough seas with 3.5-4 meter waves. I was out on deck for quite a while during that time though as we saw whales that day…around 96 of them according to Brennig, who was our whales expert from Wales. Mostly fin whales but he did identify one blue whale. So the second largest animal to ever live (Fin whales) and the largest to ever live (blue whales) in one day. In the rough seas about all I ever saw were the “blows” and a couple of fins but still exciting. The only other time we ever saw Fin whales was with the kids off the east side of Campabello Island….blows in the distance then.
