Lekeitio, Spain April 20-21, 2019

The end of our trip is alternating between the northern coast of Spain (two stops ago and this stop) and the mountains of northern Spain (last stop in the Pico de Europa and our last stop coming up in the Pyrenees).  We're back to the coast for Easter weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and as I already indicated the whole country basically is off for Easter week.  We're in Lekeitio, Spain a gorgeous (Lonely Planet's description and we agree) seaside town of about 7500 people.  We are staying along the coastal path, so five minutes in one direction is the lighthouse and beautiful sunsets, and five minutes in the other direction is town, the harbor, two beaches and an island.  As the photos attest, this was a very scenic spot, and much quieter than Potes in the Picos de Europa (although our little village in the Picos was super nice and quiet).  Our hostess doesn't speak any English and there is some confusion about how we access the apartment, (we're texting back and forth and using google translate) but her adult son finally heads over and it all gets straightened out and we're in.  Nice place although the smell is a bit strong particularly in the living room (Donna says the sweet smell is a cockroach spray).  We leave the windows open the whole time and other wise it's a nice place in a super location.  We walk out our first night to watch the beautiful sunset, and spend our full day exploring the coastal, walk, town, island, etc.  This is the Basque region of Spain, and we read the separatist movement wasn't as strong as it once was, but there are a lot of Basque flags flying everywhere, and a lot of Extra signs too, so the separatist movement seems alive and well to us.  A really beautiful town.  My research on quaint, small and romantic towns in Europe comes through again!
