Armano, Spain Picos De Europa, April 19, 2019
After hanging out in Cudillero much of the afternoon, we head over to the Picos de Europa and Armano, a small mountainside village that is only 4 or 5 kilometers from Potes (the "larger" town on the east side of the Picos de Europa), itself only 1700 people or so. It's raining when we arrive and it rains most of the night and morning but it's magical as the rain ends and the clouds begin to dissipate. Our apartment is part of a two apartment (3 if you count the owners, Jose and ?, who live upstairs) in a very old stone building. We have great views of the mountains and the apartment is really great. Another winner! We buy a few more groceries, the car mysteriously loses most if its power and just as mysteriously goes back to normal about ten minutes later, and then we head to Fuente De, about a 25 km drive up a road that dead ends in a spectacular mountain setting and where there is a cable car that for 20 Euros or so a piece whisks you up to the top and hiking trails. There are hiking trails that go straight up from the valley too, and since because of the rain we got a late start, that's what we opt to do..i.e. go straight up on one of the trails. After our strenuous hike, we drive back to the hordes (remember it's Easter weekend) in Potes, manage to find a parking spot and walk around town for an hour or so before heading back to our wonderful mountain chalet. This has the feel of a swiss village, we even hear bells on the cows. I'm (we're) really enjoying northern Spain!
