Cuenca, Spain April 7, 2019
We took the metro to the Renfe train to the airport (we know this run pretty well now) where we rented our car for the next three weeks, a 2019 4 door Fiat. With t-mobile phone service now our google maps navigation is working great (unlimited data and texting everywhere) included in our basic plan), so we plug in our next destination (Cuenca, Spain) and head south. The old part of Cuenca was founded in (that's right) the 12th century by the Moors, and it is built on the side of a gorge. It's a UNESCO world heritage site, and we are staying in the old part of the city in a great airbnb that overlooks the river, the old monastery, etc. In our two night, one day stay here we saw no other American (or any other English speaking) tourists.. a few Spanish tourists. Not a lot of English spoken here, so my very rudimentary Spanish gets a work out, but communicating when we need to works well. It snowed lightly our first night here (we are having below average temps so far on our return to Spain from Morocco). Ate at a great restaurant recommended by our airbnb host, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We had a hiccup paying the bill but much too long a story to bother with, it all worked out eventually. The next day was cool but sunny to partly sunny so a good day for exploring the old part of the city. The gorge and hanging houses and all of the old city was really great. We toured an abstract art museum that is housed in one of the hanging old houses on the cliffs...really nice..we both really liked it. A so-so meal on our last night (it was Sunday night - lot's of places closed). Back to rain as we leave Cuenca in the morning. A thumbs up for this destination.
