Motovun Croatia - Croatian hilltown
As a side trip we decided to drive to Motovun, a Croatian hill town kind of on the way to Rovinj. Only modestly touristed, the town sits perched on a hill in the Croatian countryside with commanding views of the surrounding hills. We spent about a pleasant hour and a half wandering the small town streets. The photo of Mario Andretti is included because Mario grew up in this town. Before WWII, this region was part of Italy, but became part of Yugoslavia after WWII. Most of the rest of Croatia will be on the coast, so seeking in one hill town (Rick Steves says it's the best one) was a good idea. We did have to show our passports at the Croatian border, which is the first EU crossing where we had to show passports. On this trip the main way we know we've passed in to another country is the signs change languages.
