Skomer Island - Puffins!; Pembrokshire coastal hike; May 1, 2024

Skomer Island day.  Our bnb hostess gave us a ride the two miles down to Martin’s Haven where we got on a boat that took us out about a mile and a half to Skomer Island, a small (4-5 miles of trails) but significant bird breeding island, where razorbills, guillemots, and kittiwakes breed on the cliff sides  and Manx shearwaters, and that’s right puffins breed in burrows on the tops of the cliffs.  Also beautiful fields of bluebells, and a few other birds of interest were seen, including a peregrine falcon (lousy photo), jackdaws,  and wheatears.    Puffins up close and personal.  We were literally right next to them.  They weren’t bothered by us at all.  It was a magical experience on a beautiful day.  Ah, but wait, there’s more.  The black bird with the orange legs and beak is a clough, a fairly uncommon bird.  And an Iron Age stone ring.   Archaeologists get quite excited about such things, the rest of us, less so.
