The Southern Canadian Gulf Island life: Salt Spring Island 1: Ferry ride, Reginald Hill hike
After our driving tour of the Canadian Rockies we head back into the US to stay two nights in Gig Harbor, Washington, where my new kayak has been waiting for me for about 6 months. After relaxing in Gig Harbor and loading up the new boat, we head back north into Canada, and after a one nights stay in Surrey, BC we take the ferry to Salt Spring Island and our home away from home for the next two weeks, the "boathouse" accommodation at Daffodil Cove Cottage at the southern end of Salt Spring Island. The boathouse is a small studio cottage with a nice front deck that sits right on the ocean. It is idyllic here ( a word I will use a lot during our stay here). Very serene, peaceful, quiet, with the chirping of the birds, the lapping of waves against the shore and occasional boat traffic the only sounds. Sightings of sea otters (who are living somewhere close), seals, deer, and dolphins along the shore cause us to periodically grab the binoculars for a better look. For Donna and me this is our idea of paradise, and we are both thrilled with our little place on the sea. Of course we don't sit still for long, even is such serene surroundings, so our first evening we are off on a hike up to the top of nearby Reginal Hill (only a few kilometers long, but straight up) for very nice evening sunset views.
