Cow Head, Port Aux Choix, Saint Anthony, L'Anse Meadows Sept. 2019

We left the Sunken Dory and Gros Morne NP and headed north up along the west coast of Newfoundland to Saint Anthony.  On the way we stopped off at Cow Head, and Port Au Choix, where there is a lighthouse, caribou (we saw recent cat but sadly no caribou) and archaeological evidence of human habitation dating back 5000 years.  A similar time frame as in New Grange, Ireland which we visited back in 2014 (?).  We have another nice airbnb for two nights here hosted by Sheila (and coordinated by her son Liam, who lives all the way out in Edmonton); our own separate apartment minus the kitchen but we have a self serve breakfast in her kitchen.  Two good meals here at the only two non fast food places in town, and a day trip out to L'Anse Aux Meadows, a site where Vikings/Norse had a settlement for ten years around 1000 AD (take that Christopher Columbus).  Fascinating and well done.  We did another ranger led walk here with Clayton, (69) who grew up and still lives in the immediate area.  He helped with the original excavations, and knew the Norwegian archaeologists personally.  He was a wealth of info. both about the settlement and about life here.  They didn't have electricity until 1971!

We had a 6 hour drive leaving Saint Anthony heading to Kings Point for one night.  We stopped at the Thrombolites, representative of the earliest life forms on earth (see photo description down below)on the way.
