Aria turns One! - With a travel misadventure aside
It's back to coastal British Columbia for 6-8 weeks, but on our way there we stop in Salt Lake City for 5 days to help celebrate adorable little Aria's first birthday. Anna and Nic had a big shindig at Beverly and Kerry's beautiful backyard - around 30 friends and family were there - delicious food (hot beef sandwiches cooked and sliced by Donna back in Littleton; yummy salads, sides and can provided by the Heinz clan, and Donna's famous flower pot ice cream dessert). A good time was had by all on a beautiful evening. We also hiked near Brighton (Silver and Solitude Lakes) while we were there and were hosted on Sunday by Ryan and Adrienne for the Heinz Sunday family dinner (and birthday celebrations - Aria and Rob, same birthday). As always a great time in SLC. Aria just keeps getting more adorable by the day!!
On the way there, our Honda Pilot was packed to the gills, as we were transporting a Honda lawnmower (for Nic) in addition to all of our gear for our trip along with two bikes and two sea kayaks. It took 2 attempts to get to SLC, as about 2 hours into our first attempt my solo kayak blew off of our car, ending up 50 feet off the shoulder - amazingly in one piece with only two more serious scrapes, which were repairable. We were so fortunate that the kayak didn't hit another vehicle or land in the middle of the road. So after great assistance from a WYDOT crew, we managed to get everything back to Littleton where I bought another kayak carrier (lying down this time, not tilted up) and got a hitch installed so we could carry our bikes on the back of the Pilot, and less than 24 hours after our first ill-fated attempt we were back on the road to SLC. Everything has rode very well since.
