New England Fall - Manchester, VT: Robert Lincoln, Norman Rockwell, Robert Frost

Leaving Middlebury, we head south the slow way on scenic highway 100 through the heart of the Green Mountains.  A stop in Weston VT brings us to the Vermont Country Store that ships it's catalogs all over the world - pricey but a fun visit and we actually make a purchase in the "actual" Weston country store across the street.  Our airbnb is outside of town (Manchester), a beautiful home sitting on 2.5 acres.  Pete and Jane are the proprietors (mid 70's) and we hit it off right away - and visit every morning over a light breakfast.  Our visit to this area becomes one of historic figures, Robert Lincoln; Norman Rockwell and Robert Frost.

Robert Lincoln was the only child of Abraham and Mary Lincoln to survive to adulthood.  He became very successful, serving as Secretary of War under two presidents and later becoming the President of the Pullman Company.  His home, Hildene, sits on 420 acres just outside of town...we visit the grounds and tour the house on our first day in Manchester.  Very beautiful and interesting.

Day 2 is cool but clear and we go for a great hike in the Green Mountains (Little Boulder Pond), snapping countryside pics on the way there.

On our drive down to our next destination, Williamstown in the Berkshire Hills of western MA, we stop in Arlington, VT, where Norman Rockwell (he of Saturday Evening Post cover fame) lived for 14 years.  He used many local Arlington residents as models for his paintings.  We toured a small exhibit and drove out to his home outside of town, which is currently a bnb and is for sale for a million dollars.  Just a few miles down the road, we arrive at Robert Frosts Stone House in Shaftesbury VT where he lived for a number of years and go through the small museum there.

None of this was planned (except where we were staying) and it all was great.
