Backpacking With Brad and Lux to Rainbow and Slide Lakes, Mt. Zirkel Wilderness, CO; July 2022
Donna and I backpacked to Slide Lake 41 years ago, and Brad backpacked to Rainbow Lake 40 years ago. So we returned after 40 plus years…and we’re glad we did. A beautiful spot and hike. Lux went with and was a perfect dog and she really loved it. Camped at Rainbow Lake both nights, all by our lonesome on night one, a small group camped on the other (and “illegal”) side of the lake the second night. A fantastic day hike to Slide Lake on day 2, with great wildflowers the last two miles of the hike. A very unique and beautiful outlet to Slide Lake across slick rock. Brad fell into the creek crossing a log , and I only got the before photo…I didn’t snap the photos as he went in….a major choke. He survived, and he got incredibly lucky with his electronics as his phone never quit working, and his camera worked again after he dried it out for a couple of days after he got back. Met a couple with 4 llamas heading out of Slide Lake on day 2, and a couple
of groups going in on the day we hiked out, but we were by ourselves almost all the time, which was amazing considering this is probably the most popular hike on the east side of the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness. We saw 2 fox driving in North Park, and some pronghorn, and a woodchuck too. We had a bald eagle fly over our camp at Rainbow Lake. Great weather too with highs in the upper 60’s, and lows in mid 40’s, and blue skies or partly sunny skies all three days, not a drop of rain. A great trip. I figured out I’ve three more years to go to hit 50 years of backpacking.
