Meknes, Volubilis, Morocco; 3-24-19

Another great day in Morocco, touring Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis on the way to the blue city, Checfchaouen.  We did a morning tour of Meknes, discovering the charming streets of the old medina.  From the northern gate of Bab Berdaine we walked to the shrine of Moulay Ismail, who turned Meknes from a provincial town to an imperial city in the 17th century.  Then we drove to the nearby archaeological site of Volubilis.  World Heritage listed Volubilis was one of Romes furthest outposts.  When it was damaged in an earthquake in the 18th century much of the marble was taken for construction in Meknes.  Afterwards we drove three hours to Chefchaouen, where we stayed in a Riad.  More about Chefchaouen in the next post.
