Packed up in Comox, drove the 50 minutes to Campbell River, did our grocery shopping, got in the ferry line; just missed the first ferry, got the next one a half hour later, and then had an hour and a half until the next ferry to Cortes. Got tacos at The Yellow Rose Taco truck, then took our ferry to Cortes on a beautiful day. Unpacked everything and had dinner. It’s Saturday night, a beautiful cool day and there is no one here. Super quiet and peaceful.
First full day on Cortes this year. Wonderfully cool day with highs in the low 60’s. Headed over to Hollyhock, walked around the garden and checked out the menu for the week, a grocery store run for some milk, and then a Don combo 11 mile bike ride, and walk at Hank’s Beach trail (1.5 miles RT), followed by a short hour long paddle. Donna went to a local artist art show, and we took in a nice evening sunset walk across the way at Manson’s landing.
Walked Hanks Beach at lower tide in the morning, then Donna and I went to store for fresh baked bread, and they were sold out in first half hour, so will try again on Wednesday. We both went back to Hanks Beach together…the tide was coming up but the sand was still exposed so we snuck in the walk. A walk around the property in the afternoon, and an evening sunset stroll wrapped up the day.
Pretty epic day. A morning 7.5 mile paddle launching in Cortes Bay, eagles (including one eating a fish really close), starfish, etc., Desolation Sound peaks peaking out, super calm seas, seals, otters…one of my more enjoyable kayaks. Then Donna and I did a 4 mile hike in Kwas park…lots of up and down, a good work out and of course we did not see anyone else. Started to rain as we were finishing and rained off and on this evening.
Three more from a few days ago.
Rain off and on today. I did a 12 mile RT bike combined with a 3.5 mile woods walk on the Siskin trail system near Manson’s Landing, then another 3.5 miles on Hank’s Beach and since it was low tide the beach at Hank’s Beach. Donna got the yummy fresh baked bread at the Co-Op store and went to an art “show” at Hollyhock that was pretty much a bust, but she walked the beach at Hollyhock since it was lower tide as well.
A cloudy very cool day with a high, perhaps of 61. Rain in early morning and in later afternoon/evening. Donna and I snuck in a double RT hike at Hanks Beach and walk along the beach in the late morning and early afternoon. Then a store stop, on the way back home. Hank’s beach is basically our “local walk”. Brad arrived on the island today and Donna invited him over for dinner…we had coconut curry chicken soup prepared by Donna - delicious. That’s Brad modeling my new “man bag”, a gift from Donna. My original messenger bag was pretty ratty at this point.

Rainy, cool day with a temperature around 58-60 all day and on and off rain. Brad and I hiked 4 miles in the Whaletown commons, and Donna went to the Cortes craft shop in Squirrel Cove that opened for the season today. Rod Lee, the wooden birdhouse maker (we bought.a bird house last year from him), was manning the shop and he remembered all of us from last year. Donna had a nice chat with him. Brad, Donna and I had a delicious dinner at Hollyhock and it was even better than last year. A nice end to a great first week on Cortes.
