Hiking in San Rafael Swell with Brad, George and Jeff; April 5-6, 2022

After the canoe trip, Jeff and I met up with Brad and George.  We stayed the night at the super 8 in Green River, and then headed to the south unit of the San Rafael Swell.  We set up camp near the trailhead for Wildhorse canyon, then headed to the end of Behind the Reef road (the end for regular cars), and hiked Chute Canyon.  9 miles RT, and only saw one couple.  A beautiful but very windy day, and I think George and Jeff came away impressed; Brad and I had each seperately hike the canyon before).  After a meal of elk sloppy joes provided by George, we relaxed in camp.  The next day we hiked the Little Wildhorse/ Bell canyon loop (9 miles).  Little Wildhorse is a slot canyon, and I think everyone came away very impressed by our day.  This trail is the only one in the San Rafael that attracts a number of folks…6 cars at the trailhead when we started, probably 20 plus cars when we ended.  Back to camp and an Asian dinner provided by Brad.  More people camping by us and lots of people camping all over the swell, and lots of ATV’s. It’s spring break week in Utah, so we hit it at probably the very busiest week of the year.  But  for the most part the ATV crowd doesn’t hike, and hiking is still a quiet peaceful experience.   Unfortunately diarrhea hit the group (George dodged the bullet)…I had it the worst, the second night and felt overall miserable, so we packed up the next morning and headed home.  Still all in all a great two days of hiking.
