Salt Spring Island, BC June 29 - July 6, 2019

We are back on Salt Spring Island, BC.  We both love BC in the summer months (I am down right fanatic about it due to my passionate love of sea kayaking).  We are of course at the boathouse again...it's rustic, fairly small, only has a mini fridge and no oven.....but it's right on the ocean, it's part of a very private six acre parcel, the owners are great people and we have become friends in our four visits (6 weeks total) here, and it's cheap..$650 US for a weeks stay (that includes all taxes and fees)...we do appreciate the strong US dollar..it makes Canada, a favorite of ours (we'd move to Canada if it wasn't for all our family and friends in the US) a very reasonable place to visit.

Before heading over on the ferry we stayed at Eva's airbnb home in Delta, a perfect place for catching the ferry on Saturday.  We love Eva...she is so sweet, and although this is only our second time staying with her, it felt like coming back to visit a long time friend.

We kayaked together twice; out to the Sisters Islands in Ganges Harbor and a 7 miler in Fulford Harbor around to the boathouse and back.   I did two solo kayak trips, a 10 miler from Fulford Harbor to Beddis Beach and an 11 miler from Fulford Harbor out to and around Portland Island.  Only one hike this trip but it's our favorite, a 7 miler out to Yeo Point in Ruckle Provincial Park.

We met a new couple on the island, thanks to Donna's "trespassing".  She was talking on the phone one evening with one of our kids and decided to go for a walk while she talked.  She ended going up a nearby "road", which turned out to be a long driveway, and sat down on a deck sitting in the woods to finish her conversation.  The deck (and property) owners were at home and came upon Donna sitting on the deck (it's away from their small cabin).  They turned out to be wonderful and very interesting folks from Victoria; Deb and Brian.  We walked back over the next night and had a great conversation with them.  They bought this land a number of years ago, and Brian who is a renaissance man (retired teacher, muscian, can build anything, etc.) had over the years built a small cabin on the property...water view, not waterfront, but nice...above where we stay (maybe the equivalent of a half mile away).  Two sons - one lives ingrate Vancouver area and is a lineman for BC hydro, and the other son owns a food truck on of all places Cortes Island, our next stop this summer.

Our friends Karen and Bill who live in Sedona, AZ joined us for a day on the island too.  They were finishing up a two week Vancouver Island vacation and took the Fulford Harbor ferry over for the day from Swartz Bay.  We really enjoyed showing them the island that day, and finished with a pizza dinner on the Boathouse deck.  A great day with great friends!

Another great stay on SSI!
