SW Colorado Sojourn
Donna has President's Day off, which translates into 5 days away together in Southwest Colorado; Pagosa Springs, Colorado to be specific. We stayed here as a couple on one of those time-share freebie weekends (free lodging in return for taking the tour of the time-shares) before kids (ok, so a long time ago), and then also when the kids were young, we stayed here with my cousin Pat and her then husband, Greg.
Pagosa is about 20 miles west of Wolf Creek Pass (breaker, breaker - for those old enough to remember the trucker CB song, when that was the rage way back when; C. J. McCall??; Wolf Creek Pass, coming down the other side…….). Oh but I digress (like that is something new).
It's a nice valley surrounded by beautiful peaks, although less of a mountain town than say Lake City, which is up at 8,600 feet or so, compared to around 7,000 feet for Pagosa Springs. Pagosa Springs is big enough to have a large City Market grocery store and fast food joints (but no Wal-Mart - an Alco instead), but still have a fairly small town feel. It's right along Highway 160, compared to Lake City's isolated location.
It was a very relaxing get away, cross-country skiing every day for a few hours, catching up on book reading, and a movie on the DVD player every night. That is unheard of around our house - too many other "things" are always rearing their head. VRBO accommodations in a very nice house in a quiet area (although the surrounding properties were rather run down - no covenants, and it makes you really see the advantage of covenants, unless your idea of beauty is small trailers surrounded by junk cars). Luckily, we really couldn't see any of that from our place. All in all a wonderful five days.
