Spectacular Summit County Winter

Summit County, Colorado lies west of Denver via Interstate 70, and is the main winter playground for Denver. On the weekends this is an absolutely miserable drive with bumper to bumper traffic the norm all weekend long. Ah, but during weekdays, it's a very comfortable drive most days to head up to Summit County for some skiing (in my case these days it's cross-country skiing and snowshoeing). Let's hear it yet again for retirement! Years ago in the 1980's I, and then Donna and I once we met, used to go up fairly often during the winter to cross country ski. Back then it was a reasonable drive with reasonable traffic. But back then the state of Colorado was around 2.5 million people, now it's over 5 million. Frankly I'm amazed that you can still recreate in the mountains of Colorado and not be stepping all over each other. The whole western two-thirds is mountain range after mountain range, so there are a lot of places to go and explore and still get that feeling that you have the place to yourselves.

So In January I started visiting some of the trails we used to ski, and a few new ones too. These trails are usually about 60 to 90 miles from home, so farther than the Highway 285 trails in the last post, but still not too bad for a days outing. This continues to be a great snow year in the high country of Colorado, with great snow pretty much everywhere.
