Silence and Solitude in a Winter hideaway
"Silence is one of the great victims of modern culture." "To develop a real sense of your own spiritual individuality, it is absolutely essential to have silence and solitude." (Both quotes from John O'Donohue in his book Anam Cara).
So in search of my own spiritual individuality???, I ventured back to Lake City for five days in January to take in some silence and solitude. 4 days of cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing in gobsmackingingly beautiful surroundings with, that's right, nary another soul in sight. If I (we) could afford it, I (we) would buy a plot of land in Capital City, and build an off-grid cabin as a winter retreat (would have to snowmobile, snowshoe, or hike in during the winter, as there is no winter access for the last five miles - all the more magical). But alas that will undoubtedly remain a dream…. so instead I stay in town (Lake City) and venture out to the solitude and serenity of the surrounding wilderness.
