Cathedral Grove, old growth forest
On the way to Tofino, we stopped along highway 4 and walked the trails in Cathedral Grove. This is an old growth forest that was set aside by James Douglas, considered to be the father of British Columbia, and the namesake for the Douglas Fir. It has the same feel as walking in the California redwoods, although the redwoods are even more ancient, and tall. The oldest tree here is around 800 years old, while some redwood trees are over two thousand years old. Beautiful nonetheless, and well worth the stop.
