Snow Canyon, East Rim, Benja Thai and a certified old sucker
Time for a road trip. Some usual haunts, and some new territory too on this ten day trip. First it's off to what is becoming a usual haunt, Saint George, Utah, and connecting with Nic and Anna. Colin joined us for this portion of the trip. 3 nights and two full days in Saint George.
New hike (for us) on Friday to Snow Canyon State Park, just outside of Saint George. This is beautiful red rock country. We hiked a couple of trails but spent most of our time in the lava tubes area, an area of past volcanic activity. We all explored the lava tube caves with Colin venturing the farthest in, and did some general hiking in the area. A beautiful area, and well worth a day or more exploring.
Friday night it was off to our favorite area restaurant, Benja Thai (Thai food and sushi), and a surprise visit from Matt Shaffer, Anna's good friend from Westminster Chamber Singers. Always lots of laughs when Matt and I are together. The surprise was well orchestrated, and this was an early 60th birthday celebration for me (the certifiable old sucker). Skyler, Nic's long time friend was there too, and it was a great time and a great meal. Afterwards Anna showed me a movie/slide show she put together in honor of my 60th birthday (with some help from Colin), and the tears flowed. Really well done dear Anna!
Saturday took us back to Zion National Park and a hike on the east rim trail to Observation Point. This is where Nic asked for permission to marry Anna back in April, and we all hiked in this time in late afternoon and watched the sunset over the canyon. It's a truly inspiring spot, and the first time Colin and Matt had been there. We hiked out after dark, with a full moon (and headlamps, at least for some of us).
Two great breakfasts cooked by Nic and Anna (including a delicious and decadent french toast) ensured that no weight would be lost on our hikes (but so yummy).
