Little Cimmaron trail with Kirsten and the dogs, May 21, 2026
My final hike in the Montrose area before heading back to Littleton, then on to SLC with Donna, and heading to Canada from 4 months. Another beautiful day, highs in the 50’s up qt 10,000-11.000 feet where we were. Some snow, but these trail would normally not be accessible this early in a normal year. We saw a mother black bear and her 3 cubs crossing the road , and Kirsten just happened to be making a video of our drive then, so we got a 2 second snippet of them and Kirsten turned a small piece of that into two still photos of the bears…albeit far away, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve seen a bear and her cubs (once before many years ago with Donna on a trail north of Pagosa Springs), and that was two cubs…have never seen three cubs. Kirsten also had a hummingbird fly right in front of her face and hovered there. There was no one else up there, so we were all by ourselves. And I couldn’t resist taking a photo of our gas mileage on our return from the trail head back to highway 50 (520 mpg) and then the whole way from the trailhead back to our house (92 mpg). And we got close to 30 mpg going there…pretty phenomenal.
