Lake City, CO March 2023

Our last winter week of the season, this time in Lake City, CO.   We have a long history with Lake City.  Donna was returning from Lake City with her friend Cathie (currently lives in Spokane) the day we met at a party..March 21, 1981.  Cathie’s friend Liz and her husband Duane lived there for a few years, and built a log home outside of the small town.  Lake City had 100 permanent residents then, it has around 400 now.  It’s one of the more remote towns in the US, being only town in Hinsdale County one of the smallest population counties in the US as well.    We came here in our early years of marriage, and then started up again maybe 12 years ago.  Pat and Mark joined us for the week, along with Brad, and we had a great time.  6 days in a row of snowshoeing/cross-country skiing - me, and we did not see one other person while out recreating.  Absolutely spectacular scenery!!  One of my favorite spots in all of CO in the winter is Capitol City, a 4.5 mile snowshoe/ski each way for a trail head about 5 miles outside of Lake City, and Donna and I made the RT.  All of our days out were great, and everyone contributed 2 meals each (all yummy) and we had a fantastic meal out in an amazingly wonderful restaurant there, that closed the next day for the spring.  Lake City is mainly a summer town, that draws primarily Texans, swelling the population to 4000 in July and August but it’s real quiet the rest of the year, particularly in the winter.  It’s surround by five 14er’s and spectacular San Juan mountain scenery.   We were able to bring Lux, as our rental house allowed dogs.  All in all, a fantastic time!
