A day in Verona
On Easter Sunday, we took the train for about a one hour ride to Verona, made famous by William Shakespeare as the setting for Romeo and Juliet. It's all fiction, although there is a house with a balcony that purports to be Juliet's house - if you just have to throw away some Euros on a tourist trap. Ignoring Romeo and Juliet, we found Verona to be a beautiful town with a great preserved Roman amphitheater that still hosts concerts and a world class opera festival every summer.
Our b and b is just outside the city walls and Antonio will win our award for most organized b and b host. He had made up a bound book with maps, recommended restaurants, etc. Good breakfast too. We walked the town in about three hours including the climb above the city to a piazza with a great view of town. A wonderful meal in a very small bar/restaurant recommended by Antonio. Late 60's & 70's rock was the music (Neil Young, Joe Cocker, Marvin Gaye (Indeed, what is going on?), and we met the entire staff (owner/bar tender, chef and waiter).
A short but delightful day in Verona.
