A Colorado Mountain Thanksgiving

Our Colorado Mountain Christmas was so magical last year, that we decided to do a Colorado Mountain Thanksgiving this year. There were only three of us, Donna, me and son Colin, but it was still very magical. Decent snow (here in Colorado, a good winter is one with a lot of snow, a bad winter is low snow) made for good early season AT (Alpine touring) skiing and snow shoeing. We went back to Lake City, our go to place for solitude and gorgeous scenery, about 4.5 to 5.5 hours from home depending on weather and traffic. Donna put together our Thanksgiving dinner, which we hauled with us, (way to go Donna as always) and I/we managed three days in a row of outdoor fun. Due to the wonder of our modern world, we stay in touch via internet, cell phones and even take in several Colorado Avalanche games on our computers - this is in a town of 300 people, surrounded by 5 14'ers and numerous 13'ers, and where the next nearest town is 55 miles away. On our drive into Lake City, from the turn off on Highway 50 on to Highway 149, we saw a total of two other cars in the last 45 miles driving in to Lake City. The San Juan Mountains of Colorado are one of the great mountain ranges in the US, where the peaks just go on forever.
