Cathedral Cove

Day 5 – Saturday, November 5th

Back down the cliffhanging road (on the inside going down) back to Coramandel, where we stocked up on a few more groceries, then headed down the Coramandel on the east side.  We stopped for lunch overlooking a bay, and then drove on to Cathedral Cove.  This is one of the more touristed spots on the Coramandel, so we shared the hike in to the cove with a fair number of folks (it can be really crowded in the summer, so not too bad now), but of course there is a reason it is so popular – it’s yet again – gobsmackingly beautiful.  So although it was a bit busier, we are really glad we took it in.  Following that hike it was down the east coast of the Coramandel Peninsula, eventually getting to the Bay of Plenty region, where we stayed overnight on the coast in a DOC campsite in Matata.  Lots of folks since it’s a Saturday night , but we are parked off by ourselves near a camper in a small tent, that we met in the morning.  Very basic tent, and a scooter type motorcycle.  I would have guessed a young 20 something, instead it was a man in his 60’s (guess), who was “reliving his youth”.   He was fun to visit with, and it just shows you, it doesn’t take much money if you really want to go for it.  I regret not taking his picture.    That night a late evening walk on the beach.  This was a cool night with a good breeze, but no rain.

Here's the pics from the Cathedral Cove area.
